The Samurda Handmade Tapestry
The Samurda Handmade Tapestry is curated by JIWYA, the sea art project by students at Every Life Works (ELW) and My Life Learning Center. A limited edition piece curated using original artworks from students at ELW, purely plant-based fabrics from JIWYA, and heritage textile arts from India.
At Every Life Works, we create groups of sustainable micro businesses to train and employ young adults with autism to generate wealth through ownership and working with neurotypical adults. JIWYA converted the original painting by Geneva and Joshua at ELW into an appliqued handmade tapestry that involves our purely plant-based fabrics, colors, and our commitment to using only authentic, handmade Indian textile arts.
Samudra in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and many Indian languages means Sea. This particular piece is backed with a sturdy handloom fabric, made with unbleached coarse handspun cotton yarns. The large wave uses handloom fabric made in khadi and locally sourced cotton from five states- Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The school of fishes is made with Bagh and Kalamkari Hand-Block prints. The Octopus encompasses natural hand-block prints of Bagh from Madhya Pradesh, Mashru, and Kala cotton handloom from Gujarat. Many upcycled materials from our zero-waste production embellish the tapestry and its smaller elements.
Our team then added beautiful touches of hand embroidery around the shapes to translate the painting in the best way possible.
Natural aged indigo, myrobalan, madder, alum, rusted iron scrap dipped in jaggery and tamarind seeds paste, turmeric, Palaash flowers, and such natural materials were used to complete the natural colors on this piece.
